Shadow Ops is a fantasy series trilogy by former ex-military contractor & author
Myke Cole. It is set in 21st
century Earth with elements of urban fantasy and military fantasy, making the
series a truly unique experience in the military fiction genre.
Cole's experience as a former military contractor and Coast Guard lends an
authentic quality to the setting. Melding magic and modern
military together, Cole offers a unique perspective on what would happen if
magic spawned on Earth suddenly.
The Shadow Ops series breaks from the usual fantasy tropes and since it's
completion in 2015, it is a kind of unicorn in
the fantasy literature as one of the series which combines modern military,
magic and bureaucratic elements. The
series does have contemporaries in Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight
Archives and Glen Cook's The Black Company
Series but they are set in medieval times and on fictional worlds. So Shadow Ops is currently

Magic systems in Shadow Ops Universe
If we follow Brandon Sanderson's classification of
magic systems, the magic system in Shadow Ops can
be classified as a hard magic system. That is, there are specific rules that
apply to the magic and the magic can be
quantified. Further the Shadow Ops also shows instances where the magic
is researched and studied.
Magic is classified into various schools of magic within the Shadow Ops
universe. Some of them are listed below.
- Aeromancy: sorcerers who manifest under this school of magic can
control the element of air and the weather. They are termed Aeromancers.
- Pyromancy: Pyromancers are the sorcerers who manifest magic that
can channel fire. They are one of the allowed
categories of magic in the Shadow Ops verse.
- Hydromancer: Hydromancy, similar to Aeromancy and Pyromancy, is
the magic that controls the one of the elements i.e, water. sorcerers
under this school
of magic can control water. Abilites include generating boiling hot
water to freezing cold ice spikes.
- Terramancer: Terramantic abilities enable sorcerers to channel
Earth Magic i.e control over the terrain. Terramancers can also control
the animals via an forbidden ability called "Whispering."
- Physiomancy: Physiomancy is the school of magic that applies to
organic bodies. Physiomancers can heal the body wounds and enable faster
healing. Physiomancers are also capable of the offensive ability to kill
using their magic. This is the forbidden ability of "Rending".
- Portamancy: The magic of creating portals. Portamancers are
highly rare and their abilties are illegal. Any Sorcerer manifesting in
this school
of magic is expected to surrender immediately to Supernatural Operations
Corps (SOC).
- Sentient Elemental Conjuration: Sorcerers of this school of magic can create sentient beings from elements.
This type of magic
is a force multiplier, enabling sorcerers to reinforce a small team. It also falls under prohibited categories of magic in the Shadow Ops verse.
- Necromancy: Necromancy is the magic of temporarily re-enervating dead bodies. Like elemental conjuration, it is also a force multiplier especially on battlefields.
Necromancy is also illegal under the law and sorcerers manifesting in this school are expected to surrender.
- Negramancy: This school of magic is highly illegal. It relates to black magic or witching. Sorcerers under
this
particular school of magic have demonstrated the ability to speed up entropy or rot.
