release-date 8 May 2025

Rockstar Games has broken its silence on Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), but the fans will be forced to wait another year to play the game that has been due for more than a decade. With the release window now pushed to May 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar has now the extended the gap between GTA 6 and its predecessor to 13 years. GTA 5 has seen a lot of updates in this time, even a graphics and performance update recently that bridges the different versions of the game on PC and consoles, but the fans have been waiting for another game to re-invent the classic franchise. However, the Rockstar's update also raises questions—particularly for PC gamers—about when they’ll get to join the action.

Here's everything you need to know about GTA 6's release plans, trailers, and the latest updates.

No PC Release Date Yet

Conspicuously missing from Rockstar’s announcement was any mention of a PC release date. While this has left many fans hoping for a simultaneous launch, Rockstar’s track record suggests otherwise. Historically, their flagship titles arrive on PC months or even years after their console counterparts.

GTA V was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, but didn’t land on PC until April 2015,a 19-month delay. Red Dead Redemption 2 hit PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018, with the PC version following 13 months later in November 2019.

Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to expect a late 2027 or even early 2028 release for GTA 6 on PC. While this is disappointing for the PC gaming community, Rockstar tends to use this time to improve performance, implement higher-end graphics settings, and strengthen their online infrastructure. Traditionally, Rockstar has not released games simultaneously on PC and console platforms. With the modders also running rampant on PC version of GTA 5, Rockstar admittedly has some challenge in giving the same game experience to both console and PC gamers.

GTA 6 Gameplay

GTA 6 has will seemingly follow multi-protagonist play style introduced in GTA 5. GTA 5 had 3 playable protagonists. Rockstar Games has revealed at least two protagonists: Lucia and her male partner. Rockstar may reveal more playable characters as the release date for GTA 6 nears.

Graphically, Grand Theft Auto VI promises to be a treat. Rockstar has shared a second trailer of the gameplay and cutscenes, with the description stating "This trailer was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, comprised of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes". To actually verify whether the gorgeous visuals are being rendered on a PS5 will be possible only when the game releases.

GTA 6 maps

Rockstar Games have not shied away from including large scale maps in their games, examples being Red Dead Redemption. GTA 6 may have the biggest map of any Rockstar Games property. Thanks to one dedicated redditor who analyzed the first official trailer for GTA 6, it appears that the long-awaited sequel might feature over 100 locations for players to explore.

GTA 6 is set to take place in Vice City and surrounding areas, seemingly based on real-life Florida and nearby regions, including Georgia, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and even the Bermuda Triangle.
