As the spring season draws to a close, May 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting months in recent memory for sci-fi and fantasy fans across the major streaming platforms. With new series premieres, returning fan favorites, and the highly anticipated finales of several binge-worthy shows, there's no shortage of content to devour. From killer robots and mythological gods to noir detectives and time-bending adventures, May offers something for every kind of genre lover.

Here’s a breakdown of the biggest sci-fi and fantasy streaming releases hitting screens this month.

1. Murderbot (Apple TV+)

Premiere: May 16, 2025

Based on Martha Wells' award-winning “The Murderbot Diaries,” this long-awaited adaptation has finally arrived. The story follows a rogue security android who’s hacked its governor module, giving it free will—and a tendency to binge-watch soap operas while reluctantly saving human lives.

The adaptation brings to life the dry wit and reluctant heroism of its protagonist with sleek visuals and surprisingly emotional depth. With intense action, corporate conspiracies, and philosophical questions about autonomy and personhood, Murderbot is poised to be the next major hit in speculative fiction TV.

2. Blood of Zeus – Season 3 (Netflix)

Premiere: May 8, 2025

After a one-year hiatus, Blood of Zeus returns with a third season that dives deeper into the world of Greek mythology. After the events of season 2, the clash between gods and demigods for the right to rule Olympus is brought to the brink by Heron's death at the hand of Hades. Gaia angered by the treachery, has resurrected Typhon.

The precursors to the Olympian Gods, the mighty Titans, seems to have come for the reckoning. Heron and his half-brother, Seraphim once again will seen in the thick of battle. This time the fight is between the Titans and the Olympian Gods.

3. Poker Face – Season 2 (Peacock)

Returning: May 8, 2025

Rian Johnson’s Poker Face resumes the second half of its sophomore season, with Natasha Lyonne back as the human lie detector, Charlie Cale. Having spent the first half dodging shadowy pursuers while solving murders-of-the-week, Charlie’s journey escalates in complexity and danger.

This noir-style detective series blends standalone episodes with a slow-burning overarching plot, and fans can look forward to a satisfying resolution by the end of May. Lyonne’s charismatic performance remains the show’s beating heart.

4. Fountain of Youth (Apple TV+)

Premiere: May 23, 2025

A brand-new Apple TV original, Fountain of Youth is the story of two estranged siblings partner on a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. They must use their knowledge of history to follow clues on an adventure that will change their lives and possibly lead to immortality. Starring John Krasinki and Natalie Portman, the heist team up also includes Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, Carmen Ejogo, and Stanley Tucci.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and written by James Vanderbilt, the heist action adventure spans the globe in the search of the famed Fountain of Youth.

5. Love, Death + Robots – Volume 4 (Netflix)

David Fincher and Tim Miller’s experimental anthology returns with a fourth volume featuring nine new stories that span genres, tones, and art styles. From dystopian landscapes and haunted spacecraft to satirical sci-fi comedy and AI existentialism, Love, Death + Robots continues to push the boundaries of animated storytelling.

Each short stands on its own, and this new volume includes work from animation studios across the globe, offering a truly international sci-fi showcase.

6. The Last of Us – Season 2 Finale (HBO / Max)

Finale: May 12, 2025

The second season of The Last of Us began airing in April and has been dominating conversations ever since. With brutal emotional stakes and powerful performances from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, this season tackled themes of vengeance, trauma, and the moral ambiguity of survival.

As the finale airs on May 12, fans brace themselves for what promises to be a gut-wrenching conclusion. Adapted from the controversial Part II of the video game, this season hasn’t shied away from difficult moments—and it looks like the end will be no different.

7. Rick & Morty – Season 8 (AdultSwim)
