Gems are the premium currency in Injustice 2 Mobile. They buy Premium Hero Shards, Mother Boxes, and energy refills, and most players burn through them faster than they earn them. You can pay for more, but the game gives away plenty if you know where to look. Champions Arena, Normal Arena, and League Invasions are the three places worth your time.
Champions Arena pays out gems based on where you finish, so your rank directly decides how much you take home. Climbing is only half the job, though. Other players attack your defense teams while you're offline, and every loss pushes you down the ladder and shrinks your payout.
That's why you want three good defense teams instead of one great one and two afterthoughts. If a single counter-pick can beat your whole lineup, you'll watch your rank slide overnight. Three solid teams with different strengths make it much harder for attackers to find an easy target, and you spend less time clawing back lost positions.
If you're building defense teams and have Brainiac, put him on one of them. He's one of the better defensive picks in Champions Arena for two reasons.
His passives boost the damage of your Legendary teammates, so a team built around Legendary characters hits noticeably harder with him in the lineup. The bigger deal is his ability to take control of defeated characters. When an attacker knocks out one of your heroes, Brainiac can take over that fallen character and turn it against its own team. While the Brainiac-controlled opponent fights its former allies, the three characters on your actual team get a breather, and attackers who thought they were ahead suddenly have to deal with their own hero.
AI-controlled defenders are never perfect, but this kind of chaos is hard for an attacker to plan around. It tends to turn fights that should have been clean wins for the attacker into messy ones, and every failed attack protects your rank.
Normal Arena doesn't have the pressure of Champions Arena, but it's still a steady source of rewards, and the cost of playing it is low. Clearing your matches every day and collecting milestone rewards as you hit them adds up over a season.
It's also the right place to experiment. If you've pulled a new hero and aren't sure how he fits with the rest of your roster, try him here before moving him into a Champions Arena defense team. A bad result costs you almost nothing, and you learn what works without risking your rank.
Grinding both arenas by hand every day gets old quickly, which is where Autoplay comes in. Once your roster is strong enough, you can let the game fight for you in both Champions Arena and Normal Arena and save your attention for the matches that matter.
The catch is that the game's AI can be laggy and makes odd decisions. It'll sometimes waste a powerful special or hold back when it should be pushing. You can work around that by choosing your opponents carefully so that even a clumsy AI can't lose.
The idea is to give Autoplay the easiest possible job. A strong team against a weak defense wins even when the AI plays badly, and you collect the same rewards you would have earned by playing every move yourself. Don't turn it on for close matchups, because that's where the AI's mistakes actually cost you.
Leagues are the most overlooked gem source in the game, and Invasions are the reason. This is a cooperative mode where your whole league works together, and the rewards are far better than what the arenas offer.
An Invasion pays out Legendary Character shards in addition to Gold Character shards, so it's one of the best ways to progress your roster without spending anything. On top of that, you get a minimum of 1,000 gems, and the total can climb higher depending on where your league ranks. A top-ranked league collects far more than a low-ranked one, so picking the right league matters.
When choosing one, look for a league that takes Invasions seriously. Check that members show up consistently, because the ranking depends on collective effort and a league full of inactive players will drag everyone's rewards down. Once you've joined, turn up for every Invasion, since missed participation means missed shards and gems. If your league has a chat, use it to coordinate timing so nobody sits one out by accident.
