What to Watch in June 2024: Upcoming Movies & Series on Streaming Platforms

June 2024 brings some highly awaited streaming releases to keep you glued to couch after work and not miss going out. Some releases are weekly which means they might have you chomping at the bit for the next weekly episode. But not to fret, The Bear will have all of its 10 stressful episodes of restuarant drama drop together. The Boys will feed that superhero/anti-hero itch with another diabolical fifth season. Want some courtroom/murder intrigue? Presumed Innocent from AppleTV+ has you covered. Star Wars? check. Westeros? double check. Some more Glen Powell? Yup.
The Acolyte (June 4)

Announced at the Disney's Investors Day, The Acolyte is set at the end of the High Republic era. Chronologically, this puts the series timeline at nearly 100 years before the Skywalker Saga. The Skywalker Saga encompasses the main Star Wars films hence the Acolyte is set apart but still around the familiar elements of the Star Wars universe. So expect the Jedi masters, lightsaber battles and galactic implications all in one package. What's more, Carrie-Anne Moss plays the most powerful Jedi in the series and the show creator Leslye Headland revealed to Empire in an exclusive that the inspiration is Trinity from The Matrix series. In her own words, "Trinity with a lightsaber".
With 8 episodes in total, the first two episodes will drop together with others following weekly. Catch them all on Disney+ starting June 4.
Hitman (June 7)

Based on true story of Gary Johnson, a professor who moonlighted as a fake hitman for law enforcement, Hitman follows the character with the same name who is a professor of philosophy and psychology. He also is the tech support for police sting operations. When he is put into the field , that's where the magic happens. Turns out, he is real good at getting the clients talk and get them on tape. The original article detailing the real story was reported in 2001 in Texas Monthly by Skip Hollandsworth. Skip had previously co-ordinated with the director Richard Linklater for the dark comedy crime film, Bernie.
But what happens when the sting genius falls in love? Catch Glen Powell together with Adria Arjona on June 7 or on May 24th in select theaters.
Presumed Innocent (June 12)

A legal thriller has been absent from our screens for around three months(Mea Culpa, anyone?). AppleTV fills in the gap with the story of a prosecutor who becomes a suspect in the murder of one his colleagues.
Starring Jake Gyllenhaaland Ruth Negga, the story is set in Chicago and based off a 1987 novel by Scott Turow. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the prosecutor suspected of murdering his colleague with whom he was having an extramarital affair. The story follows through the events asn they impact his marriage and family.
The Boys (June 13)

The Boys need no introductions. Each season of The Boys franchise have been more groundbreaking than the previous. The upcoming season is the fourth iteration with Amazon already ordering a season 5 before the season premiere. Helmed by Supernatural showrunner, Eric Kripke, the show is about superpowered humans integrated very realistically into American society. The show has explored every current socio-political issue through the lens of middle-class Americans, corporate sponsored superheroes, intelligence agencies and black ops squads.
One such squad is The Boys, played by Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Laz Alonso and Tomer Capone. Catch up on further details on The Boys season 4 & 5 here.
House of the Dragon (June 16)

House of the Dragon is the highlight of June 2024 streaming releases. Prequel to the massively popular Game of Thrones series, you can catch the power struggles of the dragon-riding royals, Targaryens in a fresh season. The Targaryens have split into two factions. Both sides have dragons, bound to the riders and dangerous to anybody else. The Emmy-winning series is hotly anticipated and may well break viewership records when the second season premieres.
